Increased Budget: Finding the next part of the solution
The care industry is in a state of flux as it works to meet the increasing demand. We recently saw the release of the budget providing an additional £240K for winter pressures and a further £410K made available in 2019/20 for additional care costs. These allowances will be readily available for local authorities to utilise, but with the increased pressure steadily ramping up over the years, how far will this realistically stretch?
There are only four months to prepare for Brexit whilst also juggling the need to continue the improvement of national care, and when looking at the State of Care Report by the CQC we see that whilst the overall quality of care has increased and remains good, there is still the question of how the industry is going to be able to keep this improvement going. It has been collectively agreed by local authorities that increasing spending will help the improvement of social care, but only as part of a sustainable working model which we are all expecting the Green Paper to address. With one of the biggest issues facing the care sector being reliable and trained workers, a truly sustainable model will look at both budget and workforce in tandem for the success we want.
The Nuffield Trust estimates that there could be a total shortfall of 70,000 social care workers by 2025/26, a figure that when compared to the anticipated 3.7% increase in demand for services, could see a huge missed opportunity and more strain on the NHS. There are renown difficulties retaining staff within the care industry, with around 350,000 vacancies coming onto the market a year from staff moving onto other jobs. With these frightful numbers finding permanent place in mainstream news, it prompts suggestions of what else can be done.
