History of Advertising Trust (HAT) is the largest archive of British advertising in the world, holding 9 million items in the collections. HAT's new digital reminiscence and activity resource, Ad-Memoire provides care homes and older people's care organisations with access to themed reels of some of the UK's best loved vintage TV commercials and print adverts (1950s-1960s). Many of these ads which have been carefully preserved in the archive, will be fondly remembered by older people. Furthermore the brands, jingles, slogans and general social history they hold are all potential triggers for many happy memories, which can be shared with carers and family members alike. The supporting quizzes, activities and puzzles also provide all important mental stimulation. As a digital resource Ad-Memoire can be used one-to-one on a small screen (phone/tablet/laptop) or in large group sessions, via Apple TV, casting, or HDMI cable, making it an ideal tool to support reminiscence sessions, planned activities, or even just as a form of entertainment. As a ready to go activity option for busy carers, the Ad-memoire app contains three sections: Ads of the Month, Brand Bingo and Themed Activity Reels. Ads of the Month is a reminiscence activity featuring two vintage TV commercials per week with on-screen conversation prompts. This content is also supported by hardcopy resources containing colourful vintage advertising images, quizzes and puzzle activities. Brand Bingo is a fun activity based on the classic game, but featuring reels of colourful vintage advertising images instead of numbers. The Themed Activity Support Reels section consists of 12 reels of vintage TV commercials on specific themes like: Pets, Cooking, Housework, Toys and Games etc. The reels are designed to support planned activities, however they can also be used in general reminiscence sessions. The reels are supported by conversation prompts and activity suggestions devised by National Activity Providers Association (NAPA). Jennifer Dudley, NAPA`s Director, said: `NAPA are delighted to be working with The History of Advertising Trust. Remaining socially active and maintaining community relationships supports everyone to maintain good physical and emotional well-being. Research has suggested that participating in meaningful social activities enhances brain health, lowers the risk of high blood pressure and even lowers the risk of dementia. Ad-memoire is a programme of monthly themed advertising reels from the past aimed at people receiving care to enjoy reminiscence, discussion and extension activities.
