Swallowing difficulties become more prevalent with age: but are treatable.
IQoro is a simple, hand-held medical device used to treat the underlying causes of swallowing difficulties - dysphagia.
Many people, especially the elderly, suffer from dysphagia. This condition brings with it the twin risks of malnutrition and dehydration and usually has an extremely negative effect on the person's quality of life: being able to eat and drink normally in a social setting are important contributors to our sense of well-being.
IQoro is a CE-marked Class 1 Medical Device that can be deployed in hospital setting, in residential care, or in the patient's own home. In studies referenced by NICE, IQoro is shown to have improved swallowing in 97% of patients with dysphagia after stroke, and that 63% regained a normal swallow. The effectiveness of IQoro was shown not to be related to the age or gender of the patient, nor the time from stroke to intervention.
This study, and many like it, can be seen at the company's website www.iqoro.com, and the full NICE Medtech Information Briefing [MIB i76] can be viewed there too. The site also contains detailed descriptions of the conditions, their causes, how the device actually works on the neuromuscular systems, and animations and X-Ray videos of the training action.
IQoro is already deployed in a couple of dozen UK hospitals and has approaching 20,000 users across Europe.
