We support Care settings to engage with their gardens more by enabling residents to step out meaningfully as and when they choose. Step Change Design was formed to share the findings of a large scale research project that investigated why care setting gardens were not more effectively used, particularly for residents with dementia, even when designed to meet the latest guidance. Our findings led us deep inside the care home itself and found a correlation between greater use of the outdoors in those homes with more relationship-centred care. We created a diagnostic tool, The Care Culture Map & Handbook, to help Care Homes, and Designers and specialists who support them, to understand where they are culturally, what may really be hindering their use of the garden they already have and how to move forward to a more active and meaningful use of their outside space. We have more recently created a inspirational infographic poster to share the statistical analysis on engaging outside more. We share our work through the Map and Poster tools, inspirational workshops, presentations and on-site consultations helping to create greater engagement with the garden and support a culture enabling residents to more easily go outside as and when they choose.
