Success is in the air – review of NCF Managers Conference 2018 – #NCF2018m

Inspiring Speakers and Supportive Workshops

On 12 November the National Care Forum Managers Conference opened with an inspiring plenary session from Caroline Dinenage MP, Minister of State for Health and Social Care, - by saying 'the care & support workforce are the beating heart of care'… and how right she is.

Attended by managers in social care from across the UK, this unique event is specifically designed to support those at the front line of care. The conference focus for 2018 was ‘Health and Wellbeing: living well, loving life’ - looking after the wellbeing of managers, their staff and the people they support.

The 24 hour programme was jam packed with motivational speakers including Sharon Allen OBE, CEO of Skills for Care – ‘Great leaders = great care & support’, and BIG IAN - Author of ‘Dear Dementia’ & Head of #DEMENTIAisAteamGAME Campaign (have a look for BIG IAN on social media – as he said to me, he’s just a man with a phone – but oh does he get things done!)

The most valuable resource of the NCF is the knowledge, experience and information held by the combined NCF membership – the conferences are a great opportunity for members to share and so we were delighted that Paul Newman, CEO of Greensleeves & Christine Asbury CEO of WCS Care presenting about shared their experiences of ‘Opening a New Care Home’ and Sam Monaghan, CEO of MHA about bring ‘Diversity’ to the workforce.

Interactive Festival

As part of the programme, and now in its third year, is the ‘Festival’ session, a speed-dating style event, providing delegates with hands on experiences of products and services to support their everyday practice. The exhibitors are asked to be creative and provide 3 interactive sessions at their stand around the topic of ‘Health and Wellbeing’ – this can be for the carer or the person receiving care. The buzz in the room was fantastic as delegates had wide range of experiences: a mini-massage from Hands on at Work, music therapy from Musica Music, new technologies in rehabilitation from GripAble , and many more. Have a look at the NCF website for more information on all the exhibitors.

NCF Rising Stars

In 2017 NCF launched its NCF Rising Stars Programme – an opportunity for those shining lights in NCF member organisations to develop leadership skills through an annual programme of mentoring and activities. Day 2 of the programme opened with Angharad Jenkins, the new editor at CMM, interviewing some of the Rising Stars about their experiences on the programme. Anna Lewkowicz Rising Star from The Orders of St John Care Trust encouraged fellow managers to… ‘grab the opportunities when they come along - you should be proud - we all make a difference.’

Working together for success

It is with the support of our Sponsors that we were able to bring together this year’s successful programme. The NCF endeavours to develop new relationships and bringing new ideas to the fore and we were delighted that so many new organisations joined us in 2018 including CURA Systems, Compass Associates, Dechoker, Fixxon, HUR – for Lifelong Strength and Perkbox, and it was great to bring back Altura Learning, CMM, Pozzoni Architecture – who have sponsored the event for 15 years - and Person Centred Software who supported the Rising Stars to attend the conference.

Thanks to Boots Care Services for providing Goodie Bags and Issac Theophilos, author of ‘How to get outstanding: An ultimate guide for care homes’ for providing his book for every manager!

"Many thanks and I had amazing feedback as all my members [staff] enjoyed the conference... it was amongst the best of my 25 years with NCF, ... This shows the power of NCF." Richard Macintyre, Director of Quality and Innovation, Friends of the Elderly

"The opportunity to engage and network with like minded people united in a will to improve our care and delivery" (non-member)
