Addressing shift worker recruitment and retention issues in the Healthcare sector
Quinyx’s latest research – Powering the Powerhouse – has found that nearly half of the UK’s employers struggle to recruit and retain shift workers.
This stat should ring alarms. Shift-workers and service industry workers power industries, keep us moving and working, and care for us when we are sick. They are the lifeblood of the UK.
It’s especially concerning considering the impact recruitment and retention challenges have on business growth and productivity. We found that they can translate to an average drop in business growth of 9% and a productivity dip of 10%.
What can UK employers do to reverse the trend? The answer isn’t as complicated as you might think.
Our research found that while pay – which can be difficult to address – tops the list of grievances among shift workers, it certainly isn’t the runaway concern. Unsociable hours, lack of work/life balance and career progression are all significant contributors to retention and recruitment issues.
Having worked with a number of excellent employers of shift workers, we know from experience that a few tweaks in these areas can make all the difference. Whether it is formalising career paths, or using technology to make schedules more flexible, small adjustments can go a long way in boosting productivity and growth.
