Cupcake Day: Proof is in the Pudding

Yesterday marked the Alzheimer’s Society’s Cupcake Day, the Society’s annual event in which people can sign up and run their own cake sale. Running your own Cupcake Day event is a brilliant way to positively contribute in raising awareness of the work the Alzheimer’s Society do for people living with the condition every day.

In the time it will take you to bake a batch of cakes, six people around the UK will develop dementia — overtaking both cancer and heart disease as the leading cause of death in England and Wales.

The most common form of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease. It is important to remember that Alzheimer’s can take a different form for each person; every case is unique. If you fear that one of your loved ones may be developing Alzheimer’s, look out for some of the symptoms that come with it, as this could help diagnose the condition earlier. If you notice symptoms such as memory loss, difficulty with language, reduced visuospatial or orientation skills, make sure you get an assessment from your local GP to establish what is going on.

Whilst there isn’t a cure for Alzheimer’s, raising awareness for the disease allows more people to understand the intricacies that come with it. What’s more, by running the Cupcake Day, the Alzheimer’s Society are able to raise vital funds for the care of people with Alzheimer’s.

Raising £50 enables five people to receive five hours of in depth support from the Society’s helpline team at a time crisis, £150 enables two people with dementia to attend Singing for the Brain sessions for one year, and raising £610 can pay for a Doctoral Training Centre to run for one day, helping up to eight PhD researchers to carry out groundbreaking study in dementia research.

The Dementia, Care and Nursing Home Expo will be running at inaugural MediWeek at the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham on the 17th and 18th March 2020. MediWeek also plays host to the Home Care Expo, Care Tech Live, and the European Neuro Convention; all designed to serve the social care industry.
