Prof Zoe Wyrko
Consultant Geriatrician, University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust
Zoe Wyrko worked in a nursing home while at school and university, and still regards this experience as one of the most important and formative ones of her career. She graduated from the University of Birmingham in 2000, was appointed as Consultant Geriatrician at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham in 2009, and is a visiting Professor at Aston University. She develops and implements system based services to improve the care of older people. This includes inpatient wards, as well as within the emergency department to promote early, multidisciplinary specialist assessment for older people accessing emergency hospital care. She is working with partners to develop an integrated care and health model across Birmingham and Solihull, serving a 1.25 million population. She was a subject matter expert on the award-winning Channel 4 series ‘Old People’s Home for 4 Year Olds’ and also appeared in ‘The Restaurant that Makes Mistakes,’ broadcast June 2019.
