Falls among the elderly remains one of the biggest challenges facing the UK Care industry. Older adults living in care homes are three times more likely to fall and ten times more likely to sustain serious injuries. 40% of hospital admission from care homes follow a fall (CareInspectorate, 2016). The issue affects 30% of over 65s and 50% of those aged 85 or older annually (DoH, 2009; Cooper, 2017). Beyond the significant burden on the NHS, with costs estimated at over £2.3 billion annually (NICE, 2013; NHS, 2023), falls lead to physical and emotional distress, serious injuries, and loss of confidence. This talk will cover how modern AI technologies are helping prevent falls focussing specifically on acoustic AI-powered resident monitoring solutions.
